Texas History Museums—

See below the announcement concerning the THC preservation award nominations. There are several categories of awards, including the John L. Nau III Award of Excellence in Museums. That award recognizes and honors the significant contributions of an individual or institution in the areas of historical interpretation, museum education, conservation of collections and/or community involvement. To nominate someone for the museum award, or any other THC preservation award, visit http://www.thc.state.tx.us/awards/awdefault.shtml

Also, I wanted to remind everyone about where you can find information on upcoming grant deadlines and upcoming workshops.  This information is in two separate Word documents located on our web site.  (If you have any trouble opening a Word document, let me know so I can provide it to you in an alternate format.)

To view upcoming grant deadlines:  Go to http://www.thc.state.tx.us/grantsincent/gramus.shtml and scroll down to the bottom of the page.  Under “Other Available Grants” you’ll see a link to “upcoming grant deadlines.” Click on that link to download the Word document.

To view upcoming training opportunities:  Go to http://www.thc.state.tx.us/museums/muswork.shtml and look for the link to “upcoming classes” in the last sentence of the man paragraph.  That link will allow you to download the Word document.

I recommend bookmarking those two web pages.  Make sure to check back every couple of months or so for updated versions.  You might also considering printing out the grant deadlines and keeping them in a binder somewhere.  While the exact due dates change from year to year, they are typically due around the same time every year.  Keeping a listing from last year can help get it on your radar screen in plenty of time for next year.

The Texas Film Commission - Office of the Governor, is looking for photographs of Texas towns circa 1945-1960. A feature film project has contacted our office looking for reference photographs of Texas during the 1950’s oil boom, so we are putting together a research package for them in hopes they will shoot in our communities. We are looking for a variety of photographs, including main streets, buildings, interiors and city skylines. We would preferably like towns that were involved with the oil boom and had a population of 20,000 or more people. If you have any digital historical photographs that fit the description, please send them to Brian Gannon – Brian.Gannon@governor.state.tx.us

If you have additional questions, you can contact Brian Gannon or Stephen Stephanian at the Texas Film Commission at 512-463-9200.

We appreciate your help in this project.

Texas Education Vacation

B-RI Railroad Museum, TeagueThe Texas Education Vacation website (www.texaseducationvacation.com) now has almost 700 listings of Texas destinations and attractions that offer fun and educational experiences for kids and their families.  TTIA's goal is to have more than 1,000 listings before the end of September.

You can help them reach this goal.

They need you to add your organization and other attractions in your area to the TEV web site.  If each of you will enter your organization, plus just one more attraction, we’ll surpass our goal of 1,000 listings.

Think you don’t have educational attractions?  Think again!  If your business, organization or community offers attractions or activities some type of educational value, then they need to be on the TEV web site.  If you have a lake, river, beach, theater, museum, historic homes, sites or monuments, national park, historic church or mission, courthouse, historic downtown, scenic walk or drive, buildings with historically significant architecture, a genealogy resource (library or cemetery), or a cultural event, festival, or fair, you have an educational attraction.  If your business, organization or community offers fishing, hiking, camping, bird watching, agricultural tours, then you have educational attractions.  And these are just a few examples!

ADD YOUR LISTINGS NOW BY CLICKING ON THIS LINK:  www.texaseducationvacation.com/account.asp to set up your account. Then, just follow the self-guided instructions to enter your listing.  Be sure to add graphics and photos to your listing.  And, don’t forget to select the TEKS icon if you have online TEKS curriculum based materials (e.g., lesson plans, quizzes, study guides, etc.) - an important feature for teachers, students and parents.

If you already have a TEV account, click on this link,  http://www.texaseducationvacation.com/default.asp?action=showlogin, enter your email address and password at the top of the page to access your account.

If you’re a CVB, Chamber or similar member-based organization, please spread the word to all of your members that they too can be listed on the TEV web site for free, even if they are not TTIA members.

One last request…we need you to provide a reciprocal link on your web site to the TEV web site.  Doing so will help improve the search results ranking for the TEV web site.  This will increase visitation to the TEV site, and in turn, to your web site as well.  A win-win!

If you have any questions or need any assistance regarding your TEV listing, please contact TTIA at (512) 476-4472.
